Sonderführer

In English, Sonderführer translates to Specialist Leader.  This special group was created in March 1937.  The Sonderführer were soldiers who had some special skill that was needed by the Army, but they didn't have the military training necessary for promotion of a regular military rank.  For the most part, they were relegated to staffs, construction, propaganda, survey units, or the veterinary or medical services.

They were also eligible to be promoted to officer/NCO rank once prescribed military courses were completed.  While they used shoulder cords for a time, the most frequently encountered Sonderführer insignia is the officer board with interwoven black/white/red silk threads.
