Painting of gas can strap`s hooks nad buckles

When observing original examples of gas mask can strap`s buckles and hooks I`ve noticed that we can find ones painted both grey and green but I`m not sure if the type of colour is connected to specific producer or time period. Maybe you have any observations on this topic? Also were these elements painted tan when coupled with tan painted cans?

Cans were not factory painted tan color, this was something done by individual soldiers, and the associated strap hardware would not have been painted tan neither from the factory nor afterwards (it would serve no point).

Hi Rheinmetall, I`m aware of the fact, that tan equipment painting was done in the field, but I thought it could be the same as with tan painted steel belt buckles. Moreover, here on WAF someone has shown recently an example of tan painted web belt hook - it also serves no point, however someone did it.
