Gene, all different types of base fabric. From the lightest to the heaviest. Mostly the lighter ones. I don't really break it down into 'shirt' and 'tunic' in the same sense that the Germans didn't either. Only collectors make that distinction.

I'd like to expand on what Willi said. Certainly agree that German soldiers in the field wore whatever was convenient. However, I do think there was "intent" in design and manufacture of straps and believe the following photo illustrates this fact. The Luftwaffe straps in the photo were certainly manufactured as shirt straps and the Heer straps in the photo were indeed manufactured as tunic straps. IMHO the same logic can be applied to Luftwaffe tropical straps, although again, I agree this was not generally applied in the field.

What do I have here, Heer Infantry or Luftwaffe HG?

Construction looks like Heer for me, but colour is more Luftwaffe. They are unused or at least nearly unused and not faded from green to tan.

Steve, IMHO I am not sure what to think. I have never seen any tropical HG boards before but have an open mind as I know we, to this date, haven't seen it all.

They look correctly made (some minor sewing flaws), but today these are not difficult to fake. I guess I would take the chance if they were cheap, but I would not lay out alot of $ for these.

Sorry I can't offer a more absolute opinion, and sorry for the delay in responding to your PMs.

                  Hello Steve,

Sorry for the delay, have been traveling and not on line much.

Concur with all Willi said, these are a tough call from photos only. Would love to personally inspect them.

They are certainly Luft., not Heer, and I can see no faults with their construction. The crisp, perfect, new like condition is a little disconcerting. Most mint pieces still show more age and storage wear than these exhibit. Also, their color is a bit odd, perhaps this is the photos.

As you well know, if genuine these are very rare. Heer white piped shoulder straps are also rare and desirable.

                  Regards,
                  John

Thank You all for commenting, Willi, John, Nick and Jerry!

I bought them as Heer infantry boards for not so much money and also found no problems with the construction, even in close in-hand inspection. As I assumed that Luft tropical boards usually had the tongue in one piece with the board itself, the seam made me thought that they are Heer, but the colour was no match.

The colour shown isn't the true one, the pics were made in shadow and I had manually to remove a blueish hue. Actually they are more yellowish than on the pics, matching well my few items of Luftwaffe tropical stuff (I only have one short-sleeved shirt, short trousers and the Feldwebel boards shown in this thread).

I assume they are displayed in a collection on a board for a time, one can see the pinpoint hole of a needle on the lower edge. Perhaps this explains the conditition.

Again, thank You all, I will keep them. If they are fakes, they are perfectly made.

Best wishes from Germany to You all,
                    Steve

                      EM medical board..

Though searching for a long time, I only managed to find and buy this single medical LW board. But I am happy with it and I keep searching.

One paire I like a lot... Continental blue/grey straps field modified by adding a piece of tropical cloth on the top. They were first for a Oberjäger who was promoted to Feldwebel (the tresse to the base is handstitched).
