Rare M40 ET66 Heer Double Decal Helmet for discussion

I recently purchased this helmet from a dealer I trust (yes, that’s rare enough)

It’s an equally Rare original Heer M40 double decal Heer helmet in very good condition. Helmet retains both of its period factory applied decals and most of its original factory paint. The helmet retains its liner and chinstrap and is marked DRP 1940. The Helmet itself is marked ET66 with Lot No 5070

I’d really appreciate opinions on this one because it’s sure to stir an interesting discussion because this configuration is rarely seen

For the record, I love it . . . but I always am interested in the opinions of other collectors.

    Michael

Michael, I would own that one in a heartbeat brother. Ticks all the boxes and just the perfect amount of wear for me. Killer lid. Congrats bro...

Although we do not know why occasionally tricolors were applied on M40 this one also for me ticks all boxes, both decals have the same wear.

          M40 dd

Personaly, i am not convinced by the factory's M40 DD theory. Yes the tricolor has been there for a very long time but in my opinion, it could also have been applied by the period owner of the SD helmet. Lot 5070 means early M40 prod, when most of the helmets in wear were still DD. I can imagine that the very first M40 owners tried to have the same DD than their collegues.
          Just an opinion
See how the tricolor is flaking, not something you can see on factory's applied ET helmets.

            M40 DD liner

            Second point :

Seems the back washer is missing on the rivet. Maybe a liner replacement,
ET M40's lots "50.." were most often fitted with a Werner Zahn reinforced alu 1940 dated liner.
I do not say it is a replacement, but this point has to be checked with a better attention.

Silly questionwould the crazing on the decal appear on the eagle as well?

The M40 DDs I have seen typically have 1940 dated two ply aluminum liners. Not to say a later liner is impossible, but I have a feeling the liner has been replaced based mainly on the appearance.

I agree about the liner possibly being replaced but those decals appear factory applied to me, did the individual soldiers have the ability/availability to apply their own decals?

This helmet has made the rounds so to speak.. I was shown it when fred was interested and I mentioned seeing it years back on GHW. Consensus then was it deemed ok. As it seems to today.. These is no real way to drove or disprove.

That's really all we can agree on..

We would see a pattern in the lot number database if these were factory applied.

Yes with the face-up decals, nothing else more than water was required.
Based on the numerous sets of ET's style decal "24195/22713" that the US soldiers brought back, i guess these face-up decals were available at a unit level.
