An Interesting WWII Marine Corps Private

I found this photograph in the scrapbook and photo album of a U.S. Marine who served in the Pacific in World War II. This "Marine" in the photograph wears a Private First Class chevron and EGA's on his "uniform" collar, as well as a ribbon bar!

Neat pic. Was it taken in 1945 in Japan, or China?

There is no indication on the photograph of when or where it was taken.
Here is another photograph of the Marine who compiled the album with a more service-appropriate dog!
It is not entirely visible in this photograph, but on his field jacket he wears the shoulder patch of the Marine V Amphibious Corps.

Second pic looks like it was taken stateside with the period fire hydrant next to them.

In the first pic there is also a 4 year service stripe showing on the dogs outfit. I put a small red x next to it.
