The appraisal is fair, but these late-war kai were all in leather-clad saya, so I don't know of any reference that ties these to NLF. Just the opposite, Navy specs for late-war production reduced the haikan (ashi) to 1. You can read more about them here: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topi...Bnavy+%2Brinji. Yours is nicer than many I've seen in the late war category, but I have seen some like yours, too. That's why I said it's a nicer example of the late-war kaigunto. Here's some really bare-bones examples: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topi...comment-326817

The original revelations came at post #17 in this thread, by Nick Komiya at Warrelics: https://www.warrelics.eu/forum/japan...sion-672281-2/

We were bombing the snot out of Japan's weapons production in the last year of the war. They put out an edict that allowed the producers to get very rudimentary in quality and material. They are a sign that we were winning the war and the end was near.

These swords were not just for naval landing forces. You can see tons of officers at the end of the war with them, including accountants, aviatiors, etc, if they were on the ground there is a good chance they had a sword.
