Subdued uniforms were worn up to 1970 that is a fact , not speculation and maybe/ possibly worn after that. Photographic evidence of the east germans wearing subdued uniforms at the 1970 waffenbruderschaft prove that.

as to your subdued generals tunic having painted buttons with the ddr Crest IMO I don't see any reason to doubt that it was done .

They were worn from the late 1950's to late 1960, or as far as 1970 as Tony stated. I have not found an official source for this, but some German collectors have stated this to be the case.
