I think I haven't fully got your question but you've hit the nail on the head with part of it...and that's a very important point,namely subcontractors!!!
No...to be perfectly honest I wouldn't bet a €4 bill on subcontractors when it comes to footwear,for I'm rather confident(not to say 'sure';never say never, as trhe saying goes!)that such a think wasn't as widespread as it was with Planes,Tanks and Weapons!
In my humble opinion it's just a case of "first in,last out",i.e. newly made,RBNred shafts and vamps mated to soles produced earlier...it often happened with vehicles,for instance,where later types of tanks were fitted with small components found on earlier marks!
What's more interesting in this case is that I've noticed that the second part of the RBNr. found on many pairs of shoes is 7something!Here you go the RBNr. ink stamped on a pair of late-war M44 schnuhrschuhe!
