Default Luger Markings

This is a Erfurt 1916 Luger. It is marked with two sets of markings on the strap. The first set is X'd out. It reads. 1. E. M .G.K. XV. A.K. the other, M.G.S.S. ABt 2.K. 40.

I am guessing these are police markings. Any help would be appreciated.

The original unit marking'"1.E.M.G.K.XV.A.K." can be read as 1st Ersatz Maschinengewehr Kompagnie des 15th Armeekorps. The other is Maschinengewehr Scharfschuetzen Abteilung 2nd Kompagnie weapon number 40.

These are very interesting makings and are a great example of how the machine gun's use evolved as the war progressed. It goes from being a defensive weapon to an offensive weapon. Sort of like the evolution of the MG08 into the more mobile MG08/15.

Thanks for the information. Scharfschuetzen , I assume are sharp shooters . Are these the equilivent of say "storm troops"?

nutmeg, I believe the term "Scharfschuetzen" simply translates as "marksmen". Such individuals wore a unique badge on the sleeve demonstrating their qualification. These "ss" units would be more specialized and highly trained.

As to "storm troops", Those MG troops equiped with the 08/15 on the infantry company level were there to play an offensive role so maybe you could infer that they were storm troops but I think that it would be a stretch.

Default luger marking

Nutmeg and GWA, Scharfschuetzen does mean marksman or sharpshooter. They were specially trained machine gunners of the Imperial german army. I would like to add the serial number of this 1916 Erfurt to my data base. Please contact me directly nopubl@earthlink.net if you like. Also see my web page for my book, The Imperial German Regimental Marking. http://home.earthlink.net/~nopubl. thx Jeff
