Default "Deimperialized" EK1?

Here is an oddity... This cross seems to be an TR era Imperial EK1 that has had the "W" and the "14" from the date removed. I can see the ghost of a "W" and the "1" from " 1914". The only "legitimate" reason I can come up with is that someone lost their TR EK1 and decided to make an Imperial EK1 appear to be a denazified 39er... Any opinions or comments?????

Interesting piece. Looks like it might be a Meybauer.

So, if this is a legit award by Meybauer why is there no LDO mark on a screw back?

Made before 1941 I would guess.

Thank you, Streptile! I may get it as a curiosity item if the price stays within my range...

Okay, so I spent the money and bought it. It sure does look like a Meybauer as stated, According to the database it looks more like a 7 (listed as Meyhauer) than an L/13 (listed as Meybauer) but that's probably just the photographs, they are both made by the same company, right? It's nicely vaulted and must have quite a story that we'll never know. As I said, This was obviously done post-45 and the awardee probably lost their '39er and just went with an Imperial that they then had to bring up to date (pardon the pun)... I love this one, its an oddball!

Hi,

To me it looks like a non finished attempt to create a 1813 from a 1914...

Best regards,
Michel

Here is another one.... Weird....

These COULD be made as EK1 awards for mine clearance after the war OR just replacements for '39ers that were taken from the soldiers after VE day... never know the story on these. I love mysterious crosses!

One possibility overlooked so far is the theory that many WWI vets were in some way bitter about the defeat in 1918 and wore their EKIIs backwards as a form of protest or mark of disrespect to the former Kaiser. As far as I know this is only an unproven theory, but there are certainly no shortage of EKIIs mounted backwards that may indicate this was a common practice.

Perhaps this practice extended in some form to EKIs as well - and since you cannot reverse the EKI your only option is to remove the crown and W cypher.

This is pure speculation on my part, but could be an explanation for something that otherwise seems like a very odd thing to do.

Matt

PS Michel's explanation is also very plausible. But why stop when they were so close to finishing the conversion?
