Default Tactical use of TornFuB1

Dear All,

I have been collecting original pics of Wehrmacht radios and I found lots of TornFuB1 pics, most of which seem to be posed photographs, which give no clue of the tactical use of the set.
However, some seem to show actual use of this radio in the field.
What is interesting is that though the radio is commonly referred to as an "artillery" set (in other words used by artillery observers and gun batteries), I did find pics showing this radio accompaining what seemed to be infantry units.
Would this indicate just that artillery observers were attached to infantry units to call artillery fire when needed, or could it indicate that, contrary to common belief, TornFuB1 in practice also served as a general purpose infantry radio?
I would appreciate any comments.
Thanks.

Best Regards,

Cristiano

The main infantry set was the Torn.Fu.d2, which was designed to be used while on the march, unlike the Torn.Fu.b1. There may have been tactical situations where the VHF Torn.Fu.d2 would have been less suitable, e.g. in built up or wooded areas or in hilly terrain. In those cases it is probable that Tornister Funktrupps b or f would have been assigned to infantry units. In General however the Torn.Fu.b1 would have been used by the artillery observation teams and they would have taken care not to mix up infantry and artillery observation radio networks.
