The silver button was worn with the Beamtenuniform, the uniform for all kinds of state officials, with the permission to wear this uniform;

Further it was worn in silver by the Diplomatic Corps (Auswärtiges Amt): Beamte des gehobenen mittleren Dienst; Beamte des mittleren Dienstes and Beamte des einfachen Dienstes. So by three classes.
In gold the button was worn by Beamte des höheren Dienstes, the highest class from the Diplomatic Corps, the Groups 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
