Delving further into the red cloth insignia I am a little mystified now as who exactly was supposed to wear such a patch? I definitely believe that is is horse related, but that is it. I originally said cavalry but when looking into the symbol, such a design was on "transport" sake cups as well as cavalry cups (correct me if I am wrong but isn't it supposed to be an obsolete form of a horse stirrup?) I read somewhere that it is the sybol of the IJA cavalry academy, but have not found other information about such an academy. I think Nakata's book has an illustration of this red cloth insignia in his IJA/IJN equipment ref. book, but alas, I do not have that book with me now. I have also seen it in pics. in the form of a metal collar insignia.
Great item regardless.
