European Union ECTF

Does anyone know what the European ECTF was/is and why the organization (?) would award a brass medal with the EU emblem on the obverse and a dove with an olive branch on the reverse?

My guess would be the European Community Task Force.

The ECTF was set up in October 1992 "to support the efforts of the UNHCR to deliver humanitarian aid to the former Yugoslav republics." This is the medal for the ECTF in the Former Yugoslavia (1993-1996):


There was also an ECTF in Russia in 1992.

Dave, Thanks for the reply. The medal I have (can't post photos) is brass and suspended from a blue ribbon with white borders and a gold stripe next to each border stripe. The boxed set includes a mini-medal, a ribbon bar with a miniture of the medal affixed and a lapel pin. Perhaps this one was for service in Russia.

The Mission monitors were referred to as the 'Ice Cream Men' because they were dressed all in white. They were also bloody useless, which is why UNPROFOR went in - who were also useless!

The medal was issued to mission personnel for 21 days service in (or around) Jugoslavia between 27 Jul 91 - 30 Jun 93.
