Hello Ricardo,

I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the bugle. I just wonder how one determines it was for the military. Also, from the way the cords differ in tone I'd say they have been re-wrapped at some point. I think those with the brighter color were underneath those with the most fading.

Dan is the Moderator of this forum, and I'm sure he knows his stuff so would not sell you a fake, but I'd like to know what makes that one an Army bugle rather than a school band bugle.

Tom (swordfish) who no longer seems to be with us was the Go To guy for bugles. I sure wish he was here to help out now.

I'm looking forward to getting some schooling from Dan on this one as this is an item on my "want" list for 2012 too.

Regards,
Stu

Ever since I bought this photo I've kind of wanted a bugle, but so far I've been out bid on all the auctions I attempted to buy one from, so I guess I just didn't want it as much as some other people did.

Hi Stu,

Good points and I need more infos too!

I am green in military bugles, but I find that the difference of the ropes color must it the use ... the points that the soldier touched more had discoloured because of the fat and of the sweat of the soldier.

Best regards,

Ricardo.

Hi Ricardo,

You could be correct. I was thinking more along the line of the exposed cord being bleached by the sun and that lead me to question why some would be brighter than others if they had all been positioned as they are now.

As to that Internet reference photo you have provided, it's a good one, although I would not want to be the fellow in the front. He'd probably end up deaf in one ear.

Regards,
Stu

I have always seen this type of bugle referred to as military and there certainly is enough photographic evidence to support that. Since they are generally not marked I guess its the same as the US Army 1912 bugle which is marked US Regulation but seemed to be commercially available for anyone to buy. When in Japan I have seen a number of bugles that look like the regulation ones but are much cheaper construction, often with cords that have wild colors - maybe the heavier gauge one are military and the cheaper ones are commercial. By the way these bugles are commonly seen in Japan but priced higher than in the US.

Hello Daniel,

The heavier construction certainly should be taken into consideration and not having much experience with them I was not aware of those differences. Thank you for pointing that out.

Stu

The lighter sun bleached areas on the cord indicate that it was in my opinion unwrapped at some time & then rewrapped.

I like it a lot. I've seen many and have no doubt of it being Japanese military issued in my opinion.
