A friend of mine picked this up at an antique shop yesterday and wanted me to look at it. I don't know the first thing about it so was hoping someone here could help me. It is marked L/58 on the back. Is it real or a piece of junk?
Thanks,
EQ

Hi Eric,
In my opinion it is not good. It is a post-war Souval strike. I bought an identical item at a gunshow in the late 70's and I was told it was bad by Steve Wolfe.

Jody
I am afraid this one is copy. Pretty good details to front, however, should be silver metal, and be numbered on the back. Pin and hook both should also be fastened with circular plates.
I have an original one, Manions has it currently listed for me, Silver auction, Item No 53-6329. Take a look for comparison.
Hello Eric,
Sorry, I agree, a fake. A real badge for Balloon Pilots ( 2nd Pattern ) should measure 58mm high and 45mm wide. Catch is located just above the basket on the reverse. Also on the reverse is the patent # 231240 - This is located on the back of the balloon.
