Default Operation smash 04

Hi to all,
though not a german armour item, this weekend at Knoll bay in Dorset there was a gathering by the M.V.T. and several ex-servicemen to remember those who lost thier lives in the run up to D-Day when six Valentine DD tanks were lost with thier crews off the Dorset coast (where they still remain)

Several wartime vehicle in attendence including a Churchill tank with mortar, a sherman BARV and the last surviving Valentine DD tank.

The three tanks were landed from a modern LST on to the beach and were parked on the sands, through out the day the BARV and the Valentine gave impressive displays by driving through the surf on the beach !!

On the sunday after a memorial service there was a fly past by an Andover c-1 aircraft which dropped a mass of poppies over the bay.

The sherman was kicking up quite a wake ! Though i managed some digital film here for now are some stills i took of the tanks on the beach.

Thumbs up

Hi Ashley

from what I heard it was a good turn out, my grandfather went there to lay a wreath for our fallen heroes, and not only that he made it on the local evening news, Jammy sod .

He was in the Sherwood ranger’s yeomanry and landed at Gold beach along with his crew in his Sherman M4 DD Tank on the early hours of the 6th back in ‘44.He told me about some of the accidents and deaths that unfortunately happened during training for “Overlord”.

Great Pics by the way,i missed an intresting day out

Kindest Regards

Mark

Really good images and interesting event. While Im not familier with amphibious armor it is still of interest to see how they went about it.

Thanks!
