Default FJ Regiment 1 Tunic

Hi Guys.

It has been a good year for me, I have been after 3 items for quite a while and all 3 came my way this year. The 1st was my Kreta grouping, the 2nd was a KM Helmet with my surname in it and now this !!

Regards
Shaun

Wow Shaun, that is great! Excellent score. Congrats! It is nice to see your dedication is paying off.

What are your thoughts regarding the cufftitle application?

Thanks very much Willi ! Regarding the stitching it looks like it could be hand stitched . At 1st glance you would say it is machine stitched because it is so neatly done on both sides of the Cuff Title. Not too sure if it is hand stitched or Machine stitched ?

The Cuff title shows a little wear but blends in really nicely with the fabric on the sleeve . It almost has that indented flush look to it .(If that makes any sense ) .

I have a question, when these Tunics were manufactured Pre War, did they have a machine stitched Cuff Title attached to them in the factory ? or was it up to the man to have a tailor attach one for him, or sow one on himself?

I would like to hear your thoughts Willi?

Regards
Shaun

Raoul, I am not sure.

Shaun, there is much we do not know about these tunics. I suspect this one has had the cufftitle hand reapplied. Just my guess. To date, all but one (maybe) FJ prewar tunics that I have seen has had the cufftitle reapplied. It is likely the FJs removed them, as directed, around the end of 1940. Collectors added them back postwar. Only my opinion.

Every RGG tunic I have examined has had the cufftitle machine sewn to the tunic. I use them as the benchmark. I suspect these, like the FJ tunics, were distributed to the units, unit marked, and the cufftitle tailor machine sewn. While the RGG tunics seem to have retained their cufftitles (the tunics werre probably just hung up in a closet), the FJs ones (also just hung up in a closet) had their cufftitles removed for OPSEC reasons.

Makes sense ! Security reasons ! + Stop stamping the tunics with Fallschirmjager markings just before the War starts, so we can keep them a secret for as long as possible .

Willi any idea how many of these tunics with Fallschirm Markings are left or how many you know of ? I guess there cant be many ? I have seen a few in books but that is it.

Thanks
Shaun

Hello Gentlemen,
One point of contention is the cufftitle application that Willi mentioned regarding RGG tunics. Every pre-war RGG four pocket tunic I have encountered (maybe half a dozen), have had the cufftitles hand sewn on to the tunics, and I am completely convinced that they were all original to the tunic. Now, another point to remember is that the RGG cufftitles were hand embroidered vs. the machine embroidered FJR1 cufftitles.
I just wanted to add another observation.
This particular FJR1 tunic is OUTSTANDING indeed!
Thank you for sharing,
Curtiss

Curtiss, I guess we will have to just disagree on that point. I have seen at least that many RGG tunics as well. I have only seen machine sewn CTs on them. I also disagree that FJ CTS were not hand embroidered; many FJR1 CTs, both EM and NCO, were in fact hand embroidered.

Most of my FJ CTs have been removed from tunics. It is rather easy to tell if the remaining threads are from being machine sewn or hand sewn. I will take another look before I provide the results.

Obviously, this (if the CT was indeed reapplied) does not take from the rarity and desirability of Shaun's tunic. I have one as well, to a DKiG winner. There are numerous photos of him wearing a CTed tunic, yet his tunic did not survive the war with one on it. That is the same case as all the others ones we see published in collector references.

Shaun, I know of about a dozen of these. Maybe 1 still has the original CT sewn to it. I am sure there are at least twice as many still waiting to be discovered.

Shaun, thats one beautiful tunic!

I am working on one right now, its the only one I felt comfortable with regarding period applied cufftitle, chevron, and breast eagle. Believe its the same one Willi is talking about. Its from a collection in Japan, hope to finish the deal soon.

Thanks for showing us this beauty!

No so, hand embroidered Fj titles were widely worn and appreciated.

Congratulations Shaun, is this your birthday present?
