Default Crete FJ memorial august 2009

Last sunday I returned from Crete again, as I wrote in another thread I managed to find the Fallschirmjäger memorial near Chania again and take some 'then and now' shots for you.

I was dissapointed on seeing the state it was in...

This was the monument around 1941

Ye the graffiti is not good but at least the monument is still there. Also the tree next to it looks like the one in the 1940s pic.Any translators out there who understanded the writting on the white background?

Thanks for taking the pics
Andy

Thanks for sharing the pics Deejay.

It's a terrible shame to disgrace any grave, let alone a memorial to such brave warriors.

You will notice, that it was done by GERMANS..... I feel ashamed to be one, when looking at this

wow...I one day plan to visit Crete. I just hope that somebody cleans up the memorial, replace the eagle (It doesn't need a swastika, but the eagle would be good). Vandilism at its worst. If I could afford it, I would clean up the memorial myself.

Very sad to see the state of the FJ memorial

if someone did similar damage to a war memorial in New Zealand there would be major outrage.

Its a Huge taboo to do anything at all to a war memorial in NZ.

Why can German soldiers not be able to rest in peace and even worse why are they treated with such disrespect by modern day Germans.

all soldiers who fall in war deserve upmost respect regardless.

If any of these graffiti artists had to go through what those FJ guys did i dont think they would have done such damage...

I guess the German government is not interested in maintaining War Memorials

Here in NZ most towns and cities have them and they are usually very well looked after.
