Default Einsatzstaffel - Volksdeutsche Runic 'SS' Badge in Bronze

Can anyone pin down what this badge was for, criterion for award and so forth?

Something a little different from German badges; a badge struck in Bronze for the Germanic 'Volksdeutsche' Einsatzstaffel (E.S.) of Croatia. Double runic 'wolfhook' devices, no wash or plating, it's just looks like bronze.

In 1941 H.Himmler authorised the creation of the E.S., effectively the Volksdeutsche Croat version of the German Allgemeine SS.

Referencing Littlejohn's 'For. Vol. of the 3rd Reich', many of the ES were transferred to the 7th SS Div. "Prinz Eugen".

It is reported as a possible Sports or Military Sports Badge.

Thanks...

To my knowledge that badge has never been positively identified. Probably related to the Ethnic German E.S. as you stated.

Hi Steve,
In reference to your Einsatzstaffel Bronze Badge,I collect Croatian (as well as 3.Reich)militaria & have a special interest in the Volksdeutsche in Croatia. My late father was one from Zagreb & a member of the Deutsche Jugend, his uncle was in the Einsatzstaffel der DM.I have a number of badges & documents of the Deutsche Volksgruppe in Kroatien.
I also have some copies of the "Verordnungsblatt der Volksfuehrung der Deutschen Volksgruppe in Kroatien",which was like the newsletter of the leadership containing regulations, awards and organizations.
I have the info you are looking for concerning the award of the Bronze Badge you have pictured.According to the Verordnungsblatt of 1.May 1943,the Badge is called an "Errinnerungsabzeichen" or commemorative badge of the ES.
There were two grades :Silver & Bronze.Silver awarded for service in the ES from September 1941 to 1943 or 18 months of continuous service. Also if wounded in action, but there is no evidence that the silver grade was ever issued!
Bronze was awarded to all members of the ES who served continuously for 6 months. It was to be worn on the top left tunic pocket & awarded with a certificate! It was also awarded as an honour badge to those who gave special service to the Volksdeutsche cause.
If you need any more info on the Volksdeutsche in Croatia 1941-1945,please contact me.
Regards,
Seppl
