I tried for many years to get Herr Freyer's full story but he remained silent. I am good friends with his old Schwadron commander, Rittmeister Hans Messerschmidt (whose signature can be seen on #26), who telephoned Freyer on my behalf. However, Freyer just didn't want to talk about the war. I saw that Thomas owned Freyer's Soldbuch and Wehrpass a few years ago and thought Freyer must have died, but according to Thomas's post, he is still alive. I'm glad to hear it!

Thomas, do you know the name of "Der Stier von Stalingrad"? I have not heard this before. I know of the "Löwe von Stalingrad", Leutnant Herbert Sylla, who was captured at Stalingrad and died in captivity in March 1943.
One more thing I'd like to point out in Freyer's Wehrpass is his wound suffered on 29.10.1942 (Post #25). He was shot through the neck by a Russian 14.5mm anti-tank rifle round! All his fellow tankers believed the Russian was aiming for his Knight's Cross. Incredibly, the projectile missed hitting anything vital in his neck (don't know how that would happened because EVERYTHING in the neck is vital!).
Hope everyone doesn't mind me chiming in with a little bit of info about Freyer. I've also got a few nice shots of him.
All the best,
Jason

Thomas, this is not as nice as your Ritterkreuzträger but still acceptable. First artillery, then Pz Rgt 3, then s. Pz Abt. 502 and then s. Pz Abt. 510
