Thank you Stijn, this is a great gift for Truppenkennzeichen-lover; as far as I know, this is the first report of the unit marking of this less known unit!
Well, after a couple of weeks I have concluded that Stijn has discovered another inaccuracy in Schmitz/Thies's unit marking books (please note that I am not condemning their work, on the contrary! Without their books, I would have zero clue to many things!).
I remembered having seen the insignia somewhere --- and I finally discovered it today! It is on page 37 of the magnificient photo history book by ex-Kriegsberichter Georg Gundlach's "Kesselschlacht Wolchow" (291.Infanterie-Division). But there is a small difference from Stijn's picture --- a white crank is found over the Truppenkennzeichen. What is it?
Because M.G.Btl.10 was a Heerestruppe (subordinated to an Armeekorps, not to a division), it is quite normal to see Armeekorps (A.K.) marking along with its own insignia. So we can assume that this crank is for the A.K!

Now, take a look at this excerpt from Sch/Th Band 4 --- 4 insignia variants for 291.Infanterie-Division. Can you see the shared component? Yes, the crank!

In June 1941, both 291.Infanterie-Division and M.G.Btl.10 were subordinated to XXVI Armeekorps. And the geometric insignia for XXVI A.K. is not shown in Sch/Th.
This leads me to conclude that the insignia (2) for 291.Inf.-Div. shown in Sch/Th is actually that of XXVI A.K! Please correct your copy of Sch/Th, if you have one and agree with me!
Good find and thanks, Stijn!
