My opinion is it looks to me like one of the modern repros.

Default 5th Don Cossack Badge

Repro.

There are some good threads on the forum which show you several original badges.

Another one example of this awards from the "net shops" of the 5th Cossack Don regiment.
Their commander was Kononov, and this is his name in Cyrilic on the award split in 2 parts:

KOHO HOB

Seems he was a wild guy to have his name on this award....
Before the end of the war also he took under his command all the Cossacks that fought within Wermacht.
Little are known for these men, seems none survire after their surrender to the russians.....

Ohh well, to the point.

Estimated price: 2.500$ +

I don't even think this one's original. This type has been popping up on dealers sites for a few months now.

Back in the mid-1980s, I recall being in the shop 'HQ84' (formerly 'The Old Curiosity Shop') in Gloucester and the owner had a whole shoebox full of the type that is generally considered now to be original!

Funny old world.

Hi Robin....I think that one's referred too as the 'Curly 9'. I've posted a comparison below of the three types.

Left...curly 9 (Copy)
Middle.....Original
Right....New copy?

Cheers......Peter

Default 5th Don Cossack Badge

Peter's right. Original badges have a flaw on the right hand side of the number 5 which can be seen on the middle badge.

Well, as you can imagine the award is not mine, through shop search and I am glad that we discuss these things and we learn from it and this is the most important.

As for the photos above, yes, the 1st of Peter's is a really cheap version with bad finishing of the sword handle and both ends of these swords with the date good indication of a very cheap copy.

I can see also the difference between the next ones, thanx Peter by the way for sharing them.

Thanks Peter.

The ones I recall at HQ84 were all in dull aluminium, with pebbled backs and steel pins. The paintwork was matt.

Unfortunately, I can't recall the finer die details...............this is all from memory over 20 years ago!

As a shelf filler I quite like this type but wouldn't pay more than £20 for one.

Maybe one day I'll own an original Don Cossack if I can stop buying shields...

Has anyone ever seen a photo of one of these crosses being worn pre-'45?
