I picked this tornister up a several months ago on ebay for the small sum of $35.00US and also received from the seller the details where his father picked it up from. It's stamped bdt41 and inside is stamped ohne Einlage which I believe means without internal frame. On the back the original owner put his name Sperl K. There are no holes, rips, or tears. It came with the short straps for hooking it to the "Y"straps. Here are the pics of it. Comments welcome.

That's a very nice tornister you have there and obtained for a superb price
This is what I received from the ebay seller:
ORIGINAL WW2 German Pony Fur Tornister (Field Pack). I am clearing out a lot of original items my Dad brought back from Germany in 1945 when he finished his tour of duty there from the Battle of the Bulge. This came from the Saar area near Faha, Germany. The leather is in very good condition but it does show cracking from its age. I put mink oil on it to try to help preserve it. The perfect gift for the WW2 history buff or a veteran for their collection. The fur is still tight and looks great. It is marked "BDT41" for 1941 manufacture. On the back is name of original owner "K. Sperl" which might make for some interesting research.
I'll see if I can find the info the guy sent me about his dad if I haven't lost it.
Bump!
Does anyone know who made this tornister BDT41? believe the stamping on the interior stands for with out inner frame or stiffener. Should this tornister have the short straps or the full shoulder straps?
its a complete piece as is. you just hooked in onto your Y straps. the straps attached version was the earlier model. this style was supposed to replace it but some makers kept making them with the straps anyways. Glenn
I wonder if Sperl K is the owner's name?
Anyone have a manufacturer's name from the code BDT? I believe the 41 is the year.
When did they stop putting the mess tin bag in the tornisters? I can see no trace of one ever being there and removed
There is no messkit bag in the M39 Tornister. They are found only in M34 ones.
M39 Tornisters were produced with short straps for the troops that were issued Y-straps, and with long straps for the others.

sorry my mistake on useing caps for the bdt. Thank you for all the input so far. I have been told that the "D" rings at the top are for secureing an A-frame to the tornister and the lower center strap was to hold the bottom cross web of the A-frame
