Is this Kriegsmarine?
Hi,
I don't know if this is the right forum for this kind of question, but since there are some KM specialists around, I'll give it a try.
I have this Luftwaffe porcelain serving dish/teller, nothing special...but the front is decorated with some insignia that is not familiar to me. It looks like something KM related (torpedo's).
Any opinions on the marking on the front of the dish???
thanks for advice!
Koen

Here's my guess: Maybe it was given to the the torpedo bomber fly crews(HE 111H-6)?

Yes, interesting plate. Must be LW since the Luftwaffenkommando See (Luftkreis IV), which was the naval arm of the KM was abolished by Goring in 1939. It existed from 1935-1939 more or less, then the LW took over those responsibilities--they did not do it very well for it they had, the U-boat threat would have been much more significant.
Since your plate is after 1939, it can't be KM in my mind, it has to be LW. I am fairly sure the KM aviators wore the combined pilot observer badge, pilot badge and observer badge just like the LW up until the KM air arm was abolished.
Looking at the gears and the dividers, sure looks like something on the construction or maintenance end.
Maybe the dividers had something to do with navigation, but looks more like engineering I think, since it overlays gears, not a chart.
My theory for what it is worth.

I think John is probably right. Engineering sounds good. Nice Luftwaffe platter nonetheless. Platters are rare.

It still had something to do with maritime missions I think. The LW was assigned to those missions after 1939--there is no other reason for the anchor.
So, while not KM, I think it has to do with torpedo/bomb maintenance or flight crew of a Luftwaffe squadron. John

I own exactly the same type of plate, with the same insignia on the front and maker on the backside from 1941. I bought it from Helmut Weitze in 2002 and I managed to dig out the old invoice where he describes it as:
"Kantinengeshirr from Torpedoversuchsanstalt Eckernförde"
If I remeber it correctly - Eckernförde was the Luftwaffe testingground for torpedos. I cant remember if it was situated at the coast of the Baltic Sea or the North Sea.
By the way - I payed 50 euro for it

Found it!!
Its near Kiel At the baltic coast.
Do a googlesearch - I found some info about the place at different sites. It seems that it also functioned as (or still is) a Uboatbase.
Also read that we (the swedes) plundered the small town Eckernförde TWICE during the "thirty years war" Wonder how much there were to loot the second time?
