can anybody tell what this visor is? I thought it might be reichsbahn related but I think not. the few people have showed it to verify it is third Reich period and the best ideas are that it is army fire brigade or fire brigade veterans visor. any thoughts?
thanks jim
Sorry I can't help identifying the visor but I wonder why the hat would have a 1978 newspaper inside?
It surely couldn't be to make a better fit because why would anyone be wearing it? The only thing I can think of at the moment is maybe it was used to retain the shape of the cap by a previous owner?
I hope someone can put a name to it for you!

For what it is worth, I had lunch w/two old time collectors this past Friday, one of them is mentioned in a few of the Hat references you may have on your shelves...both thought this was a post war piece.

I believe this visor to be a piece of the Staatsforstdienst:"Forestkeeper" .And I think it's a hundred percent authentic piece...
Unless someone finds a period photo of that funky emroidered wreath, this hat will always be in doubt. (from photos)
No one here has seen it, I've spoken to 3-people w/ a combined 100 years of experience (two of them long time hat collectors) and no one has run across this piece.
If you look in "Mutzen von Staat & Partei" (page 113) it does roughly describe this piece...but it doesn't make it real (pre-45).

I'm fairly certain I sold Jim that hat a couple of years ago, and believe I described it as a direct-embroidery Reischbahn visor (we see these with political visors, so why not with this type of visor). I could be wrong, but I got some consensus before I described it as such As for it being period, I can stand behind it confidently. Usually, when a repro is identified, it's never a "one time" piece but has been seen before. Given that it is quite old, we would expect to have seen its type surface before if it was NOT period. The paper, as I remember it, came with the visor - definitely added by a collector to help present a stiffer display profile. That it has not been seen before gives me a greater sense of comfort. Furthermore, I would state quite emphatically that an item need NOT have a period photo in order to be saved from doubt. There are plenty of things we believe to be 100% original, that have so far not been found pictured, for one reason or another. However, most things eventually turn up.
I'm glad to see this being opened up and debated. I did get this from Craig and although I did not think it was true reichsbahn (but time will tell) I did think it might be reichsbahn related. I.E bahnschutz or bahnwasserschutz. but the more I research it the more I got lost. that is why I put it up for discussion.
I know it is not a good idea to buy things you can't identify but I have pasted on things in the past only to find out later it was a very rare item.
even if all else fails a collector taught me a while back not to worry if an item is valuable or of great interest to others " if it lights you up! get it " and this did and does.
but please keep up the thoughts.
thanks jim
p.s and interesting take on the Staatsforstdienst:"Forestkeeper as being dark blue, black felt, red pipping and left facing eagle, i never looked in that direction. but will do. i'm open to all ideas.
