Default Odd Tropical Insignia

Hello everyone:
I am being offered this insignia and at first glance I thought it was fake. After seeing the other items that came with it according to the Veteran’s family member, I started thinking it could be real.

So, is it real and what the heck is it? Obviously some type of hat insignia but I have never seen one like it before. Thanks for any input, Skip

I think this one came on maroon cloth instead of sand gray so it could be worn on the tropical fez!

Makes me wish I still had all of my old SGT Rock comic books...

I'm going to go against the grain on this one. I know of one that is verifiably veteran sourced, and no, not added by a nostalgic veteran in 1976.
These come in pure rubbish copies (as per black and white add) and carefully sewn pieces on various backing material.
Yes, it always comes down to the comfort zone of each collector.
