Here is a little series showing an EK2 award ceremony. It is a pity that the photos are in such bad condition. Photos are from an Inf. Rgt. 19 album.

Larry

How proud were the early EK.II recipients.... Here Lt Fritz Steigemann , serving in the 73.I.D., awarded on 24.12.1939. I ignore if it was linked with the polish campaign or for bravery during one of the rare action of the "phony war"...

If he really reeived the Iron cross from this Hauptfeldwebel/Spiess, that would be the very first time I would see such a ceremony held by a NCO.... Perhaps he is just congratulating after the award ceremony.... Nice set anyway, tks for sharing !

I agree as well. Note that he is holding some kind of tray (?) under his left arm. I could imagine he was following the awarding officer with that tray full of EK2/EK1 and shook hands after every EK had been handed over.

Yes, that is a sign of respect given by the Spieß to newly decorated soldiers in his Kompanie. I remember it from my military days. It is still done today.

Lionel, those are very clear and sharp pics of Steigemann. Neat that he pulled his cap at a rakish angle over his right eye to pose for the camera!

Oriano, that is fine award ceremony pic with the Wehrpass. Makes it something special. Would only second Lionel's comment that it is also the first time I have ever seen someone capture a pic of a Kompanie Spieß shaking the hands of his men during an award ceremony.
