Default Divisionskennzeichen der 269. Infanterie-Division

Hi,

I'm trying to find out what the Divisionskennzeichen of 269. Infanterie-Division is an illustration of. Firstly I thought it might be Holstentor but this is not the case so it must be from another city in northern Germany.
Unfortunately it's not described in the division's own history by H. Römhild.

Can anybody assist?

Actually Wehrkreis X as a whole, Hamburg included. Lübeck was selected as HQ.

The logo looks similair to the Stadttor of Hamburg. Can this be verified?

Hello !

According to Schmitz-Thiess, the Divisionskennzeichen was chosen similar to the Stadtwappen of Hamburg :
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landeswappen_Hamburgs
because many soldiers came from Hamburg or places close by.

I assume that was also what refue wanted to point to.

Best regards,

Archi

Hi Archi,

Thank you for the clarification! Much appreciated.

Many of the 269’er soldiers did come from Hamburg but I would say that describing it as a “norddeutsche Division” is more covering. IR-469 was the division’s backbone and that regiment was situated in the Groß-Hamburg area so I wonder if this was the reason why they chose the Stadtwappen of Hamburg as Divisionskennzeichen? IR-469 had HQ in Lübeck so my previous statement was not entirely correct.
