Hi,

Botelho Moniz the main responsable of the Radio Broadcast Propaganda, establish also that the Radio Headquarters would be the Recruitment Center for all Portuguese that wanted to volunteer to fight alongside the Nationalist troops.
Several hundreds volunteered and sent to Spain to fight Communism.
They were called the "VIRIATOS", and were integrated and mixed in the Spanish troops, unlike the Germans and the Italians that were independent forces.

Also Botelho Moniz, organized during the entire War circa 6 convoys, to help the Spanish Nationalist Troops, with tons of food, clothes, blankets, etc.
He has also participated in the convoys, and they were received in several Spanish Cities as heroes.

The Portuguese were so praised by the Spanish Nationalists that the "Viriatos" had in Madrid their place in the final Victory Parade, together with the Legion Condor, and the Italians.

In the photo some of these Portuguese "Viriatos" with Botelho Moniz (with red cross)

Hi,

Following my thread nº 13, I will go now deeply to the Official Fascist Organizations created in 1936, the LP and the MP, with the objective to keep the country more "Fascist" ready for an eventual Communist Revolution, coming from Spain....which never happened as the Nationalists won the War...

I will start with the LP-PORTUGUESE LEGION-LEGIÃO PORTUGUESA

The LP was the Militia, and was only composed by volunteers.(many Ex-MNS)
Their main mission was to be alert for a possible Communist Revolution, and also to help the PVDE-The Political Police ( a sort of "Portuguese Gestapo"), in the repression and policing.

By April 1942, the Government conferred to the Portuguese Legion Military Services, the Organization of the CIVIL DEFENSE (CDT-CIVIL DEFENSE AND TERRITORY), as well as the coordination (with the Navy,Army, Security Forces, and Portuguese Red Cross) and the responsabilities of organizing regular exercises.
Wartime Portuguese Legion strenght reached a number of 50,000 and those about 30,000 were uniformed, armed and instructed Legionaires.
During the all entire war they were supporters of the Axis Cause.

With the AXIS defeat in 1945, and the change of the internal politics, the Legion started losing importance on Portuguese Social and Social life.
In 1974, the Portuguese Legion was considered nearly extinct.

In the photo Salazar visiting a barrack of Legionaires, around Lisbon.
Interesting to note the Fascist salute...
