Default January 1 & 2 1945

Entry of January 1st 1945

"After an all night session we are plenty tired, cold and hungry. Feel sort of lost without (Capt) Nick. Colder than hell!"

I can't imagine that your Commanding Officer who you trained with since boot camp at Camp McClain, who taught you the ropes and most likely made you feel somewhat safer in a world away from home being killed and now that imagined security one felt is suddenly gone. Notice there is no mention of the New Year.

Entry January 2, 1945

"A comparatively quite nite, a few Kraut patrols. We got a little sleep - not much. Cold C rations. Walk to Rondu (Belgium)"

Default Entries of January 3 & 4 1945

Entry - Wednesday January 3rd, 1945

"Plenty of snow and little sleep, colder than hell. Hot C Rations for a change. Little action, Krauts are falling back."

This was one of the worst winters on record (at the time) in Central Europe. Even though outfitted with winter gear the men of the 345th Infantry were freezing from the severe cold and heavy snows.

Entry - Thursday January 4th, 1945

"Colder than hell and more snow. Hope it stops snowing soon, makes it rough going."

Hard to imagine what the mind-set is with all the adverse weather adding to the worries of trying to stay alive during their skirmishes.

His Ike jacket still exists today; changes are the Ruptured Duck and cloth DUI on his garrison cap.

Thx everyone! Been away for a week due to back being out of sort.

Let's continue shall we as we finish up week #2 of January 1945. I forgot to mention that my fathers Regiment was asked to partake in the infamous "Battle of the Bulge".

The 87th Infantry Division was required to assist in the Battle of the Bulge where we find the 345th Infantry Regiment, (along with 346th & 347th) being rerouted to the vicinity of Bertix, Belgium, which would have been the south-eastern end of the "bulge".

Tuesday - January 9th, 1945

As usual not much sleep but more than usual. Set up an outpost 150 yrds from Germans 1 1/4 (miles) beyond our lines.

Wednesday - January 10, 1945

IS freezing here on that damn outpost. Only 6 of us. Jerries' all around. Mines and booby traps all over.

Thursday - January 11, 1945

Good food for change but not much of it. Colder than usual. Snowing like hell, Feet frozen for good.

Friday - January 12, 1945

As usual the daily rations of 88s and mortars. Benson killed - tough luck kid!

Saturday - January 13th, 1945

Meals still good. It's been red hot 24 hrs a day.

As they continued to fight valiantly in the Bastogne region to thwart Hitler's last real attempt of the West Wall Campaign, the men of "I-Company" came across a small farm house not far from the fighting from their outpost.

Sunday - January 14, 1945

The old man & old lady are swell, every nite at 8pm they have hot milk for us. We give plenty of chocolate and c-rations.

Monday - January 15, 1945

St. Hubert free - move up to woods near main highway (Tillet). Start attack on big woods - K-I-L plenty of
