Default Japanese uniform rank question

I got this uniform at an estate auction and I was wondering if the rank was determined by the sleeve bars like US uniforms. This is all new to me so any information on this uniform would be much welcomed
Thanks

Yes, the rank is determined by the sleeve braid, in this case Captain rank. The purple piping denotes the engineering branch of the Japanese navy.

Thanks Daniel ! that's funny I didn't notice the purple until I took the pictures with a flash on then the purple really stood out.... awesome info thanks I have been on your web and have learned a lot from your site too

I am looking at the shoulder boards now and havnt found much about these like what is the rank and what time period were they used ? are they appropriate for this uniform? I guess I should say epaulets not shoulder boards. Is the only difference one goes on the standard uniform and the other on the dress uniform?
