Default smoke damage

we had a fire in our high-rise this sunday. all my collar tabs, boards and straps and my one waffenrock and visor were all subjected to smoke from burning plastic, styrofoam, burning kitchen garbage etc.. Also my dad's football letter sweater from 1933. All this stuff got exposed to all that oily smoke. Does anyone have any experience dealing with this? I'm concerned when I start submitting a claim for 1930's-1940's era cloth military they're gonna be scratching their heads.

I'm very sorry to hear that! I believe the removal of smoke residue is a specialized field, and that it would depend on what materials combusted. There are a few conservation specialists on the forum--I'm sure someone will contribute information.

Sorry to hear about your fire. I went through the same thing back in
the 1970s. --- Be careful. Best advice is to call a company that specializes
in cleaning up after fire.

We just washed everything in the washing machine several times until the
smell went away. But many items faded.

I was addicted to the Hokey-Pokey, but I turned myself around.
