Default Hans Elshoff’s tank destruction badge.

Hi guys,

thought it would be nice sharing this small grouping with you.
A tank destruction badge in silver with 'bataillon befehl' and a personal letter
sent to the family. These items once belonged to Gefreiter Hans Elshoff who got killed
in action while fighting on the Eastern Front with infanterie regiment 191.
The strip remains in fine condition, beside some mothing on the black backing. Most likely never attached
on the uniform.
Pictured in the book 'Das panzervernichtungsabzeichen' by Dirk Schneider on page 108.

Dear Miss Elshoff,

as the hauptfeldwebel of the company, i would
like to express my condolences to the heroic death of your son Hans.
As long he was in my company, i enjoyed him because he was such a tough soldier.
In battle he was a role model until he got hit in Alisowo. That was on February 10th.
On February 11th i buried him with other comrades in the hero cemetry of Maloarchangelsk.
Now his grave adorns a cross with his steel helmet. I have photographed his grave and would be
happy to send you a picture. It's a picture where the grave had not yet been prepared. His comrades
did that the following day. The company itself marched on a few days later. Perhaps we will come there again
during the course of the campaign, but one cannot say that in advance. However the local commandment (Ortskommandantur)
maintains and prepares the grave in the same way like the many others. The hero cemetry of Maloarchangelsk is one of the
best designed i have ever seen in Russia. You don't have to worry about taking care of your son Hans' grave.
Your son Theo wrote on March 16 informing about the belongings from Hans that were kept by the unit. However, we sent it
to your adress with registered mail on March 10, 1943. I hope it arrived by now. I can't tell if it's everything you knew
he owned, since the heavy fighting in February many things were destroyed by enemy action. The fighting
is just as tough as before, with the difference that we are attacking now. Even if some comrades have been torn out of our ranks,
the spirit remains the same. Above all, we will never forget our dead comrades. Your Hans continues to march with us in spirit
until the final victory.

Kind regards and Heil Hitler

Yours truly,
Karl Heinz Rettloff
Hauptfeldwebel

Thanks for sharing this excellent grouping. What a dreadful
letter the hauptfeldwebel had to write to Han's mother but he did it with
such compassion and respect. I'm sure it was one of many , many
letters he had to write.

The personal glimpse into the history of this soldaten is awesome. Good for you.
