Default wood cleaning rod - US Army?

Hi-

Please see attached photos of a wooden cleaning rod that a friend gave me. 36 1/2 inches long, diameter of rod about 1/2 inch, length of metal tip about 1 1/2 inches, diameter of ball/handle a litte over 1 1/2 inches. A magnet does not stick to the metal tip. Wood might be hickory?

No markings that I can see. Rod has a slight bend to it as pictured.

Friend said a number of these came from an Alabama National Guard unit in 1975...

Anyway, is it miltary or what? Any ideas, IDs, etc., much appreciated.

Brian

Probably a shotgun cleaning rod. The 1/2" diameter is too large for any military rifle made in the last 150 years.

The jag on the end appears to be larger in diameter than the 1/2" rod, so wouldn't fit in a .50 caliber bore.

Thanks gents. It does not fit a 45-70 bore for certain. My friend thought it was for that application but not so.

Diameter of jag/jig/metal tip is 13mm or 33/64" (in "grooves" or rings: about 12mm, but note that the grooves are tapered, if that makes sense...)

Thanks.

By the time you put a patch over the end of the jag it will be considerably larger in diameter.
