Great photo, reminds me of the Atlantic storm sequence in Das Boot.

From uboat.net;

UB-87 was a type UB III submarine

Laid down 23 Feb. 1917

Launched 10 Nov 1917

Commisioned 27 Dec. 1917

Commanding Officer from 27 Dec. 1917 thru 30 Sept 1918 was Karl Petri and from 1 Oct 1918 thru 11 Nov. 1918 was Bernhard Hibisch.

UB-87 sank three ships for 18,671 tonnes and damaged the White Star Liner Persic in Sept 1918.

If you scroll down half way you will see a picture of Persic along with the same photo of UB-87;

Thats a classic U boot image and one that often gets mistaken for many things it is not in various books or websites:

-a world war 2 U boot

- a u boot in the mid atlantic (you can see the island of Heligoland (sp) in the back ground)

all the same it is an awesome picture and one i first saw in the book on WW1 U boots "Raiders of the Deep" by Thomas Lowell and it helped me fall in love with all things U boot.

cheers

dave
