Had a quick look at the London Gazette

James Bickerstaffe Stevenson 437171

2nd Lt 6 August 1954 Royal Artillery
Major 30 June 1967
Retired 6 August 1972

I couldn't see promotion to Captain.

If you can find a library or archive with RA journals for that period that would be a good place to look. Previously I would have suggested you send an enquiry to the Firepower Museum but as they shut a few years back that avenue is now sadly closed. Good luck!

P.S. As an afterthought you might try posting this same request on the British Medals Forum. Someone there will likely have the appropriate journals and will have a look for you.

Hi Robb
Well it's been posted, I should be able to tell when it arrives if that is the case.
I will post up better photos of the area in question
Thanks for pointing that out!

It doesn't sho the obvious signs of having been name erased - thinner rim, slightly falttened bit - so I'd say it is named as it was on issue.

The fact that he's an officer and a field officer at that should make his research easier. If he is the same man as the J Stevenson murdered in 1974 - a connevction with Ulster there? - there may be info in the news archives of whatever town/city that event occurred in and many newspapers do have on-line 'morgues' of past stories now. Good luck!

This soldier Major JB Stevenson RA retired 2 years before lt/col J Stevenson RA was shot dead in Northern Ireland, Iím not the best researcher in the world but Iím happy with this medal.
With my name also being Stevenson I do like to collect medals with that name, Iím not sure if any other collectors do this ?
Kind regards Chay

I would post the naming on the BMF, the RA looks a bit odd to me, donít forget there are lots of replacement medals out there that have had the R removed or turned into RA.
Best - Greg
