One well known photo, just in front of the ex French Embassy (now French consulate), a few meters from the ex US Embassy (now US consulate), on the morning of the Tet offensive 1968.

Speaking about Hue...

OK, it is hard to make it out on the photo... This was taken in 2009 through the window of an old building. There were 2 complete racks loaded with brand new M16, plus one filled with M14 ! Unbeleavable !

Open windows, but 2 meters away ! Hmmm Vietnam stocks...

Francois,

thanks for the continued updates, always fascinating.

Just a quick question, what is the context of the photo with the room full of weapons, how on earth did you find or notice it?

Is it from a military or paramilitary organization?

Ralph and Patrick, thank you. I will add more soon.

Patrick, actually the place is very near the citadel itself, in the old city part, across the Perfume River. I was visiting a small museum and had parked my "motorbike" nearby an old building, a few meters from the entry. When I came back, I just had a quick glance inside, just out of curiosity. There were inside several shelves with US and NVA canteens, with small labels. Then the weapons. The building must have been a reserve for the museum.

I had not noticed it the previous years when I went there.

Phan Thiet during Tet 68 :

A mixture of Ranger, Popular Forces and Military Police. All kinds of uniforms, tiger, ERDL, tailor cut (US 1st pattern style), etc, just name it ! All kinds of headgears too...
I love that shot.

Same place in 2010.

And a focus on the building visible on the left of the war time photo (foreground on the 2010 photo, the one on the background did not exist at the time).

Just before the entrance of the bridge used to be the "Banque du Crédit Commercial du Vietnam".

Now replaced by the Agribank. The base of the bank is built with the old french walls...
The white building still has the same balcony.
The building on the far right is still the same. It has been deeply changed but the concret water tank on the roof is still there.

I have just noticed that the Lambretta shop is now a Suzuki dealer. Nothing really changes in Vietnam.
