i worked as a tour guide in VN, so i have visited 85% of the country up and down, and this also during my free time, just driving arround the country on an old russian motorbike, but this was during the mid 90s.
The best place are the central highlands, the nothern part arround Dien Bien Phu, and the nother eastern part of Cao Bang, the coastal plains are growing at a fast speed, even the central highlands now, last time i was in Pleiku in 2008 they had the first skyscraper there, wich is a hotel, i guess.

another place wich is nice is the Mekong delta
basicaly if you move away the major towns and tourist area you will find the good old vietnam.

i have tons of pictures, but not much relating to the war, maybe some from khe sanh will have to look.

That was really great to meet you first in Vietnam Alex! I hope that one day we will be able to travel together as planned.

Here are some photos of le col des nuages aka Hai Van pass, north of DNG.

1967.

1970.

2007.

Hai Van Pass camp was the last protection for the city of DNG. It was compulsory to go through for the NVA when they moved south.

The road is overhung by several bunkers.

This might have happened in march 1975.

Thank you Beezman for the extra photos!
2007 was a great tour !

Here is what we have found there : ammunitions (M16/M60/AK) + clips, PRC25 handset wires, claymore plastic parts, M72 container part, etc...
