Default Muslin or other cotton fabric?

Hello,

i have one question. On englisch collector and safekeeping websites you can often read, that muslin is the way to go for your collection. I live in germany and muslin is quite uncommon here, so its a little bit expensive (about 20€ per 1x3 Meter). Could i use any other unbleached 100% cotton fabric or have muselin something special about it?

Every 100% cotton fabric should be acid free, am i right?

I want to wrap the cotton around a torso to keep a uniform jacket safe from damage.

Greetings

If you want to be sure about the fabric, it's best to buy from a reputable archival supply company. It's more expensive, but then you know exactly what you are getting, how and with what (chemicals) it's been treated, whether it's bleached or not, etc. Better IMO to spend a little more so you don't have an unhappy surprise when you examine the tunic in a few years!

Hello Erich,

you are right. I shouldnt go cheap on the false objects. Sadly there isnt one Archival supply here in germany that offers fabrics such as Muslin. I bought a bunch from a fabric store online, its from the USA (the company is called Rockland) and the common suggestion from the american/british archival websides. I think that will work out.

I think i found another and an even better fabric from an archival Store in germany. https://archivbox.com/various-collec...de&___store=en

Its 100% archival safe and even made out for paper and documents. Its a strong material and should be easy to wrap around a torso. I will see how i will get it to hold its place. I will cancel my muslin order and will go for this fabric.

It isnt an cotton fabric but i think it will do the job.

It sounds like it should be fine.
