The leather shoulder straps on this used example are mis-matched, this is common.

My favorite part of this Tornister is the interesting maker mark. Originally stamped S.A.W. Muenchen 1937, the date was overstamped with 1938 and the new date then accentuated with ink! I can only guess at the reason for this.

This pack has a lot of names (some scratched out) and painted numerals. This was issued and re-issued to many soldiers. I like them this way.

Here is the other strap, also dated 1938, with an E38 depot stamp.

Here is a mid- or late-war Tornister of the type used by the Heer late in the war, though this one was issued to an SS soldier. It is made with blue canvas which I associate with late-war gear. The pack is marked inside with initials and a Feldpost number corresponding to 16. Kompanie, Panzergrenadier-Regiment 25 (12. SS-Division).

Black leather is standard on packs from this period.

This one is marked with an RB number. Some people have the misconception that the Tornister was replaced by the Rucksack early in the war. I believe these "fur packs" were standard issue for Infanterie troops until the end of the war.

Here is an all-canvas M34 tornister from 1941. Aluminum hardware is common on pre-war packs, this one has steel hardware which is what I would expect on a pack of this period. The canvas tornisters have been discussed in other threads.
