These are always hard to judge for me,
What is your opinion of this NJG pin ?

That's a nice thing - the unit pins are some of the best Luftwaffe pieces in my view. Interesting too as I see it confirmed that the emblem was associated with Nachtjagdgeschwader 1. However, I always look at http://www.feldgendarmerie.net/SAEZ1.htm when a pin like this comes up and there I see various renditions of the emblem attributed to Signals (Luftnachrichten) companies. Is this simply a case of differing Luft functions utilising a common emblem?

As often, a knowledge with history of the unit explains the logic - mixed with a photographic evidence can explain
About the colours from NJG 1

White encirclement around the falcon crest = NJG 1
Red encirclement around the falcon crest = NJG 2
Yellow encirclement around the falcon crest = NJG 3
.../... and so on..............
of course, the no colour border did exist (you can find them on pics) but you first have to get the logic and complexity of the all unit - this is only my opinion and your can disagree.
