Default Defence of Odessa medal

Hi all

After staring myself blind on differences in Odessa medals I think I finally have seen the light and found myself a good one. Please let me know if you agree or not

Cheers Thomas

I have no idea, no experience with them or anything like it. I do really like yours a lot though. I've never seen many Soviet WW2 medals.

I believe it to be a good one. Can you also show the full medal incl. suspension...front and back please?

Edit: now watching on my pc instead of phone and there is one thing that I notice which makes yours different from the orginals that I have seen. It is the exact location of the ring above the word "оборону". The originals that I have seen all have the ring exactly above the letters "ну" while yours has the ring centered above the last few letters "ону". A minor detail and I am not 100% sure whether this is a bad sign, but the originals that I have seen all have this little feature different than yours.

Hi Marcel

Soviet medals is IMO hard to figure out, so thanks for taking a close look at my medal. I didn't post the suspension as it clearly postwar and in any case circumstantial.

Cheers Thomas

I am usually allergic to mis-aligned rings and indeed this one triggers me. I like the rest of the award but the fact that the ring does not line up with the hammer and sickle, nor the middle of CCCP, gives me an itch. I would be careful in this case.

Thanks Tretov for the input, it's really a good example of how enigmatic these medals are that were not dealing with design, is it cast or die struck etc. We would never evaluate a Memel medal from this perspective.

Cheers Thomas

The mis-alignment is indeed a bit worrying. Can you make a pic from the ring where it is clearly visible how it is attached to the medal (view from above)? It could be that the ring is re-attached since there are some rough edges on the place where the ring is supposed to be originally. Though in all honesty, there should be more solder marks visible on the side as well if re-attached.

Btw. don't pay too close attention to my photoshop skills

it's a good one, with a possibility that the suspension ring has been re-soldered. congrats
