Default Early Deutsches Afrika Korps and Panzer Lehr Soldbuch.

Here is a well used Soldbuch that I've had for quite some time but as ever, not had the time to sit down and research it.

It belonged to Heinz Sperber and was issued when he held the rank of Waffenfeldwebel.
As you can see it has a photo of Scherber in Waffenoberfeldwebel(?) uniform wearing some of his awards and is stamped by his then current unit: 4 Kp. Heereswaffenmeisterschule I.

A simple dog tag of: J.S. 315 - Infanterieschule!

Issued 17.10.1939 by Verwaltungsgruppe und Betriebsabteilung, Infanterieschule, Döbertiz-Elsgrund.

Page 4 shows Infanterie Lehrregiment under section B as a replacement unit. As he was based at Infanterieschule, Döbertiz-Elsgrund it is not clear whether or not he took part in the French campaign with this unit.

His first field unit is Regiments Stab z.b.V. (mot.) 200:
Formed 27.1.1941 in Wehrkreis III for action in Africa with Sperrverband Libyen (for command of MG Btl. 2 and 8) under 5 leichte Infanterie Division in Libya/Africa; 1.8.1941 15 Panzer Division in Africa.

According to page 22 he was actually in Africa from 16.2.1941 until 14.11.1941.

The second field unit is Stabskp. Lehr Regiment, clearly "901" has been added and later "Panzer Grenadier" to this unit desination:
Based at the Infanterieschule, Döbertiz-Elsgrund it was mobilised during the Frencch campaign and the opening stages of the campaign in Russia. Formed as 901 28.12.1942 in Wehrkreis III, Stab and I. through Infanterie-Lehr-Regiment; Renamed Panzergrenadier-Versuchs-Regiment 901 since summer 1943; Renamed Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 901 since 10.1.1944; Destroyed August 1944 in Normandy.
Under Army Troops: 1942/43 South Russia (Don bend, Starobielsk), January 1943 with 8 italienischen Armee, Feb./March 1943 1 Panzerarmee with 19 Panzer-Division. 1944 Panzer-Lehr-Division: France, March Hungry, May Paris, Normandy.

Entries put him with this unit from December 1942 until October 1943, when he was posted to Heereswaffenmeisterschule I....so didn't take part in Normandy!

Page 12 shows he suffered from dysentery then epidemic dysentery from 13.2.1942. At the time he was with the Medical Collection Point in Naples and was transferred to a home hospital. 11.9.1942 he had a check up on his physical staed and was found fit for active duty.

February 1945 he suffered from artillery/grenade wounds and remained in hospital until the end of the war.

At the time of his last wound he was serving with Regiments Stab Batterie, Artillerie Regiment 18, 18 Panzergrenadier Division. At the time fighting in East Prussia under 4 Armee, Heeresgruppe Nord.

Award wise, Sperber had the following:

1.8.1941 - Iron Cross 2nd Class
8.10.1941 - Infantry Assault Badge in Bronze
19.1.1942 - Italian Commemorative Medal for the Campaign in Africa
- Entitled to wear the "Afrikakorps" Cuff title
20.4.1943 - War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords
7.4.1938 - Long Service Award IV Class

Of course he would also be entitled to at least a Wound Badge in Black.

/Ian

Very Nice. The several DAK /Normandy threads are very interesting. I like this one because of the Russian connection.

Ian,
Great Soldbuch. Nice to see the "Afrikan Korp" cuff title entry. You don't see that often.
