Does anyone know of a reference book I can buy that lists out the 1957 awards.

Hi,

There are 2 books both in German language, see image. The best resource is the 57er section of the WAF.

Best,

Jeff

Hi,

in the two books from Krantz and Geeb/Kirchner you can find all the allowed decorations of the Third Reich, the decorations with the design-change (57er) are included without a differentiation.

In this book (DOE, 10th edition 2017) you can find all the 57er decorations in the section:
Bundesrepublik Deutschland, A (57er Auszeichnungen), page 334 - 364

As far as I know, there are no books on 57ers that state/show which makers made which pieces etc.
The above mentioned books are excellent, but only show and list the different decorations, not the differences between Deumer/Deschler/ S&L etc. the variants, the rarity, the fakes and so on.....
Several books on wartime awards feature a 57 section, but unfortunately, many of these are full of errors, and do more harm than good!!
As already mentioned the 57 section here at WAF, is, IMO, the best place to learn about 57ers, and their makers!!!

You know Nigel. Some of the authors of wartime books that reference 57 items are members of WAF. Have any of them ever contacted you for you opinion of 57 awards? As you say, they do more harm than good and it surprises me that they don't reach out to you for advice.

Regards,
Rudy

I think some mistakes were made, because most TR collectors usually look to what they know...... which is understandable!!
For example..... if a postwar/57 piece is made from a modified wartime die...then the obvious answer is... whoever made the wartime die, also made the postwar/57 version too..... This though, is not always the case!!!
You have to compare 57 with 57, not 57 with wartime! There are so many examples of dies being bought, sold or shared, between the 57 makers that finding links with wartime pieces can lead you in the wrong direction!!
Its not just the more obvious parts of a medal or badge that need to be studied, its also the small details...rivets, soldering, gold & silver washes, paint, finishing etc.
In most cases each 57 maker had its own unique take on each of these finer points, and without the pieces in hand, or a large archive to study, its no surprise that the authors of many TR books have come to wrong conclusions??
