Default M42 Mess kit AWC

Hello there, another find !! I hope there will be others! This Messkit is not painted Feldgrau over a red primer... No, it is enamelled with a thin layer of Feldgrau color over a thin sheet of metal. It weighs less than 500gr almost as light as aluminum, while other copies in my possession from the same manufacturer AWC weigh less than a kilo !! I can not date this Messkit but it is probably late or another variant, at least in the search for a best weight and looking for a durable camouflage! Thanks for looking!

Default AWC Enamelled Mess kit

Hello, Apparently AWC has produced two models of "M42" enamelled Mess kits with two different processes. One of them is heavier, and I would like to put a date on these models. I guess the lighter is the latest produced… Thanks for your help!

One is heavier because it is enemaled ( enemal itself weight a lot ) and other is lighter because it is simply painted with normal paint green paint. The thickness of steel is probably the same and enemal makes the diffrence in weight.

If would compare two enemaled messkits than you can say about diffrences in thickness of steel ( but you don't ).

need a micrometer. Measure the wall thickness and everything will be clear.

Hello, i agree the thickness of steel must be the same! This incredible difference in weight comes from the thickness of the enamel layer. The enamel of the lighter messkit is of the type used on canteens and cups, very fine (another variant).
