Default uboat personnel serial numbers

Hi. Will uniform items (when numbered) have a "U" before the O. or N. which precedes the enlistment # and year?
Thanks

If the sailor had the U added in front of his Stammrollnummer (for example O. 123/41 T or N. 321/42 S.), then all his personal items (not only uniform items) could be labelled with his modified number U.O. 123/41 T or U.N. 321/42 S.

So, items weren't originally issued to u-boat men with the U? Thanks

IMO the U stands for U-boot.

I have had a few things that came directly from U-boat crew and the markings was always either U.N or U.O.

This info about the Stammrollnummer is taken from ubootarchiv.de
http://www.ubootarchiv.de/ubootwiki/...mmrollennummer

The U-505 journal is from the book: "The German Kriegsmarine Unterseeboot / U-Boat and the Capture of the U-505".
As you can see they all have either U.N or U.O in their Stammrollnummer.
https://books.google.no/books?id=PXJ...%20u.o&f=false

The last picture is from wikipedia about the U-1308.
There is one stammrollennummer listed and as you can see, that also have the "U" is UO.10437/40.T.

André

Thanks. I recently saw a KM dog tag with the "U" and I know U-boat crewmen soldbuchs have a big "U" stamp in them.

Not for nothing, but I've been aboard U-505. It's in a Chicago museum. Very cool
