It seems from further diggin that these patches were worn by Italian POWs who agreed after 1943 change of sides to work in a non combat role for the U.S. govt..after swearin an oath they ceased to be classed as POWs !..they were issued U.S uniform & a garrison hat with a round Italy badge sewn on it aswell !...Semovente

This was posted in the USMIlitaria Forum: (so its more appropriate on a US uniform).
Still a POW patch and appropriate for a POW collection, but also used as a nationality identifier after their status got changed!
________________________________

The patch was one worn by Italian Prisoners of War in US custody. Now this gets a tad technical, but after Italy surrendered to the allies in 1943 their status changed since legally Italy was no longer at war with the US. This enlarged the scope of labor that the Italians could perform as no longer POW, they were not governed by the Geneva Convention restrictions of not being allowed to work in war/war support industries. I believe it was at this time the Italy patches came into use. The one shown in the photo is a large green oval with white lettering "ITALY" on it. There is also a smaller round version of a red circle with green center and "ITALY" across the center. I have never seen a picture of this in use but have been told years ago it was a hat version. The Italians were organized into "ISU"'s in the US (Italian Service Units).

14DEC43 Marshall Badoglio, head of the Italian Provisional Government issued a message to be read to all Italian POW's in the US. "In the new political-military situation it is our intention to proffer the Allies all possible, active collaboration to achieve the common objective or ridding our country of the residue of German troops still occupying a large section of our nation. Therefore, it is our duty to help the allies in every possible way excepting actual combat." On 6JAN44 the War Department released a plan to organize ISU's in companies of up to 200 with Italian officers. They were issued American uniforms on which they wore appropriate Italian insignia. All members of these units were volunteers from the POW camps, and were paid approximately the monthly salary of American soldiers.

Very cool! In the period picture you see the same dark chocolate brown dyed British BD uniforms as the impression I used to own,
now residing in a collection in Italy!

A amazing group of wartime photo's described as 'every day life in a Italian POW camp in Britain' !...the pics show ...workshops to the camp bakery...along with all other aspects of camp life that faced these men each day.
