(sorry it is by google translate)

Hello,
It does not have the pocket to put the key with which you found it, it is not normal for a kit of 1940 and normally for a MG34.
See this kit from 1939: http://www.mp44.nl/equipment/mg_pouch.htm we can see the cover and its seams on the back of the kit.
the cover disappears on the end kits 44 and 45 and not on everything.

If this kit was modified to put the grid of MG42, for my part I have never seen a modified early kit. If you consider that yours has been.
We both agree that this can not be done without dismantling the sheet metal of the kit. It is clear that the change is clean. So the plate will have been dismantled.
But in this case, the rivets at the bottom of the plate are inaccessible and there should be a difference in riveting between the top and bottom when reassembling but the rivets are perfect. So to make this change the kit has been disassembled entirely. Frankly I do not believe it because we would see the difference of wire of this disassembly of facade. On this kit the thread is homogeneous and too thin in my opinion.

I persist in my idea, i think that it is a copy.

best regards
Gurt

I must admit that I agree that the markings are not consistent and also leaning forward to think they were added later...well done mates
As for the pouch I still like the leather and stitching

Please see a comparison of several Franz Brehme, Walsrode stamps I have found around the internet, to the one posted above. Seems the firm still exists (since 1825):

Can you see a basic difference in the pics

This is my small contribution to this post. A 1938 shovel leather carrier made by Franz Brehme, Walsrode. Unfortunately the marking is weak but it is still perceived that it is arc-shaped!

Does anyone have another MG gunner pouch produced by Franz Brehme?

Let me play devil's advocate for a moment. If we agreed the stamps aren't good but the pouch does look good... how about a mid to late 1943 produced pouch, with the cutting for the MG42 AA sight and lacking the MG13 spanner, as wouldn't need it. Perhaps some one wanted to add some value and get some extra money...but made a mistake. Anyhow, there will always be something wrong in that pouch.

So, is it the conclusion that this is a fake, or an altered piece?

No conclusion. Without a close inspection I wouldn't dare to say what it is exactly so, if I wanted a 100% safe original item, I wouldn't buy it. If the price was good I would take the risk, but I believe it goes up to 300€...so not for me.
