I've just noticed this thread -- many thanks to Bolewts58 for his informative historic background note posted in 2015, and to Mchap for providing a link to it now. For many years I've had an Epp Raute w/o cloth sleeve diamond in my collection but had no idea about these details. Mine is unmarked, but it is great to have this additional information. Many thanks again, friends!

There are two basic types: marked and unmarked. The marked one has a high relief, thick rim and is marked "1919 Schwergele" which is actually the designer, not the maker. The unmarked version has a thinner rim and lower relief.

The von Epp badge was around for a long time. After the Freikorps period, it became a tradition badge in the Reichswehr and then in 1934, the SA. There are Third Reich versions of the 2nd unmarked badge with RZM numbers on the back.
